In her role as Director of Policy for the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance, Dr. Laura Koontz advocates on behalf of women touched by ovarian cancer to ensure that they have access to affordable, quality cancer care. Prior to joining the Alliance, she served as the 2012-2013 American Society of Human Genetics and National Human Genome Research Institute (ASHG/NHGRI) Genetics and Public Policy Fellow. As a fellow, she handled a range of issues related to genetics and personalized medicine both at the NHGRI within the National Institutes of Health from September to December 2012 and the Office of Congresswoman Louise M. Slaughter from January to December 2013. Prior to beginning her fellowship, Dr. Koontz earned her Ph.D. in Molecular Biology and Genetics from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine for work uncovering the transcriptional regulation of a tumor suppressor pathway implicated in several types of cancer.
